The Role
The Health and Safety Advisor provides practical, field-based health and safety support to operational teams within a complex chemical processing and refinery environment. The role partners closely with Operations, Maintenance and Contractors to ensure effective implementation of safe systems of work, strong risk management, and continuous improvement in safety performance while enabling safe and reliable operations.
This is a permanent, full time position based at our Kwinana Refinery, offering a stable Monday–Friday roster.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide practical health and safety support to Processing and Maintenance teams in a refinery or complex processing environment.
• Partner with frontline leaders to support safe operational decision making.
• Coach supervisors and operators on safe systems of work, including Permit to Work, isolations, SIMOPS and critical risk controls.
• Maintain strong field presence through regular Time in Field, reinforcing safe behaviours and identifying risks.
• Provide process safety advice aligned to regulatory and industry standards.
• Develop, monitor and improve Process Safety Indicators and overall Process Safety Management maturity.
• Facilitate risk assessments, JHAs, task hazard analyses and pre task planning.
• Guide the identification, implementation and verification of effective hazard controls.
• Support consistent application of permit to work and isolation requirements.
• Monitor control effectiveness and escalate emerging or unmanaged risks.
• Support the implementation and continual improvement of the site Safety Management System (MSMS).
• Monitor compliance with WHS legislation, Dangerous Goods requirements and site standards.
• Conduct inspections, audits and verification activities, supporting practical, risk based improvements.
• Lead or support investigations into incidents and near misses, ensuring timely close out of actions.
• Analyse safety data and trends to provide insights and recommendations.
• Build strong working relationships with operations, maintenance, engineering and contractors.
• Facilitate safety meetings, pre starts, training and coaching activities.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of safety procedures, registers and reports.
Role Requirements
• Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent experience in complex processing or refinery environments.
• Formal training in risk management, incident investigation, and hazard identification techniques.
• Current C Class Driver’s Licence.
• Minimum 5–8 years’ experience providing health and safety advisory support within complex chemical processing plants, refineries, or Major Hazard Facilities, such as:
-Alumina refineries
-Nickel or mineral processing refineries
-Chemical manufacturing facilities
-Major Hazard Facilities (MHFs)
• Demonstrated experience working embedded with operational teams, supporting Processing and/or Maintenance functions in high-risk environments.
